Jean connection: Alpha Phi sells denim for charity

The women of Alpha Phi were busy clearing their chapter house to make room for thousands of designer jeans in the hopes of selling them and raising money for their philanthropy. The charity denim drive was held on Tuesday, April 7 from 12 - 5p.m.

This was Alpha Phi's first year working with Charity Denim, a business that works with sororities nationwide to sell high-end designer denim jeans at a discounted price. The participating sorority then donates ten percent to the charity of their choice.

"It is a new way to raise money, and it is great because it gets all the women involved on campus, not just Greeks," Bethany White, junior member of Alpha Phi, said.

The women of Alpha Phi heard about Charity Denim through another chapter at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. The chapter at TCU raised $30,000 and gave $3,000 to their charity.

"We are hoping to raise more than $30,000 because we are a bigger school, and should have a larger turnout," Angie Trae, Alpha Phi President, said.

The denim drive's discounted prices were open to only students with a student ID, and it was located inside the Alpha Phi chapter house. The ten percent raised went directly to Alpha Phi's national philanthropy, the Alpha Phi Foundation, which raises awareness for women's heart disease.

Most denim prices were less than $100 and were significantly discounted from their original prices. Brands included: [BRAND NAME], [BRAND NAME] and [BRAND NAME]. Alpha Phi transformed one of their rooms by setting up outdoor tents for girls to change in.

"I think it is a great idea," junior Ashley Motchan, said. "It definitely gives me more incentive to spend the money to buy jeans when I know the proceeds are going to a good cause."

"This being our first year doing the denim drive," Trae said. "We were really excited and grateful to have such a large turnout from MU students."

CharityDenim has worked with the Delta Gamma, Alpha Pi, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Chi Omega sororities in the past, and began last May at the University of California - Los Angeles .

CharityDenim and the sororities involved with the sales have donated to charities such as Habitat for Humanity, battered women's shelters, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The American Cancer Society.
